Plant Word List
Entries are included in the Plant Word List because either the scientific name or common name (or both) are not found in our preferred sources or are incorrectly listed in those sources. Entries without plural forms mean singular and plural forms are the same. If no species is listed after the common name, it’s because the name may be used with more than one species. Common names may not be the most-used designation; many regional variations exist. Editors have discretion as to which common name will be used with the current scientific name. (clarified 12.11.19)
For berries, grasses, and weeds, see multiple entries under B, G, and W for listings not in A–Z.
For common names of vegetables, see Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition.
