Avoid writing about medical issues (symptoms, studies, medications) in general way that suggests they affect men and women in the same way. A writer should not take a common claim at face value.
WRONG: The first sign of a heart attack is chest pain.
RIGHT: Chest pain is a common sign that you may be having a heart attack.
