Product Listings

In stories that feature products, provide product info at end. No period is needed at the end of the URL:

Revlon Matte Lipstick in Love Potion is fashionable year-round. $3.99; WALGREENS.COM

If the story is describing a general product but suggests a product at the end, there should be a comma between the product name and the price, and a semicolon between the price and the URL:

Use organizers to keep your kitchen drawers clutter-free. DRAWER ORGANIZER, $7.99; CONTAINERSTORE.COM

When a product is mentioned within a story that is not specifically a product story, URLs should be in all caps for consistency:

Pop in an educational DVD like The Magic School Bus ($5.99; AMAZON.COM) to keep kids entertained.

Book References

Book information should be in parenthesis. A semicolon should separate the publisher info and the year published.

Within story copy, keep same typeface as main text:

His book, Harry Potter (Penguin Books; 2004), is a classic teen novel.

In product stories, publisher info should match product text treatment, but remain in parenthesis after the book title. If a price is included with the information, it should appear after the year the book was published, separated by a semicolon:

Rachael Ray’s 30-Minute Cookbook (MEREDITH CORP.; 2009; $32.99) has easy recipes for cooks of all skill levels.

Design Elements

All stories, including product stories, should have an end bug at the end of the main copy. End bugs should be preceded by a thin, fixed space.

Niche caps are used in FOB stories, but not in main edit stories.

Department heads appear in a script font in the upper corners of FOB stories, but not in main edit stories. Be aware that stories can moved  at pinup, altering which ones will run in which (FOB or main edit) section.

Captions

Medallions that appear throughout the issue hold text that acts as a second dek or photo caption. These do not necessarily need to be complete sentences.

Not all images will require a caption. However, if the contents of the photo will be confusing to the reader without a caption, please suggest adding one.

Use captions to identify people within the story when necessary or appropriate.

See also Captions and Directionals.
